The Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of ancient Rome. As a polity, it included large territorial holdings around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, ruled by emperors. From the accession of Caesar Augustus in 27 BC to the military anarchy of the third century, it was a Principate with Italia as the metropole of its provinces and the city of Rome as its sole capital.

At its height under Trajan in 117 AD, the Empire covered approximately 5 million square kilometers and ruled over 21% of the world's population. The Romans built more than 50,000 miles of paved roads, aqueducts that still stand today, and laid the legal and architectural foundations of Western civilization.
