The LEGO Group — About Us

Our History
The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from the small town of Billund in the Jutland region of Denmark. Christiansen began by making wooden toys, and he named his company using the Danish words "LEg GOdt" — meaning "Play Well."

In 1947 the company began experimenting with plastics, and in 1949 produced the first "Automatic Binding Bricks" — the forerunner of today's LEGO brick. The modern LEGO brick with its current stud-and-tube coupling system was patented in 1958, and remains unchanged to this day.

Following Ole Kirk Christiansen's death in 1958, his son Godtfred Kirk Christiansen took over the business and established the LEGO System of Play — the idea that all LEGO sets should be compatible with each other. Today, the company is led by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, Ole's grandson.

The LEGO Group remains a privately held company, owned entirely by the Kristiansen family. Our headquarters remain in Billund, Denmark — where it all began over 60 years ago.

The LEGO Motto
"Only the best
is good enough."

This motto was established by our founder Ole Kirk Christiansen in the 1930s and remains the guiding principle of the LEGO Group to this day.

We believe that play is essential to the development of children. Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow through creative play and learning.

Every LEGO element is tested to meet or exceed the strictest toy safety standards in every country where our products are sold.

If you stacked all the LEGO bricks produced in 1997 on top of each other, the tower would reach 10 times to the moon and back!
