anonymous_coward writes: "I'm starting a new job at a Unix shop and everyone here seems to have a strong opinion about text editors. Half the sysadmins swear by vi, the other half by Emacs. I've used pico in college but I'm willing to learn. What does the Slashdot community recommend and why? Is vi really better or is Emacs worth the learning curve?" Read more... (2,104 comments)

Y2K: A Comprehensive Guide to the Year 2000 Bug
|
Posted by Hemos on Monday September 14, @03:21PM EST
| from the roll-back-the-clock dept.
With less than 15 months until January 1, 2000, the Y2K bug is becoming increasingly discussed in mainstream media. But what does it actually mean? Most COBOL programs written in the 60s-80s used two-digit year fields to save expensive disk space. When 2000 arrives, these programs may interpret "00" as 1900. Slashdot reader linuxfan99 has written a comprehensive technical guide to what is broken, what has been fixed, and why you should still stockpile canned goods. Read more... (558 comments)

New 450MHz Pentium II from Intel — Worth the Upgrade?
|
Posted by CowboyNeal on Wednesday August 26, @01:49PM EST
| from the faster-faster-faster dept.
Intel has released the Pentium II 450MHz processor, pushing desktop computing performance to new heights. At roughly $800 for the chip alone, is it worth upgrading from a 350MHz system? Benchmark data shows approximately 25% performance improvement in CPU-bound tasks, but the bottleneck for most users is still hard drive speed and RAM. AMD's competing K6-2 at 400MHz offers similar real-world performance for considerably less money. Read more... (334 comments)
